Stroke & Judge Training Schedule
Hello to all of our wonderful Dolphin volunteers! The training schedule for Stroke & Turn Judges has been posted! Please consider if this is a position you might be interested in. We NEED more judges this year!
What is a Stroke & Turn Judge?
The Stroke and Turn Judge determines whether the technical aspects of the swimmers’ strokes are legal. It requires knowledge of the USA Swimming Rules and Regulations and a willingness to fairly disqualify swimmers from both teams when appropriate. If a violation is seen, they notify the Meet Referee of a possible disqualification (DQ). The Meet Referee makes the final decision.
Officials are ambassadors for the sport of swimming: They support the athletes and coaches by ensuring that the swimming competition is conducted in a safe and fair manner for all.
I know for many the idea of disqualifying a swimmer (and especially their own swimmer) is intimidating but, while it may seem harsh, this is how they learn and grow. As parents we’ve all watched our children learn something new whether it was learning to walk or ride a bike. They make mistakes as they’re learning but with encouragement and correction they soon master the skill and there is much to celebrate!
Being an S&T Judge can be an exciting way to be a part of the meet instead of just being a spectator. You will have a full understanding of every stroke and be better able to help your own swimmer(s). And the more you know about the sport, the deeper your appreciation and passion for it. Plus, you get a front row seat to watch some great swimming while doing the job!
Here are are some thoughts from my husband, Jaime, who’s been an S&T Judge for 5 years now:
“I initially wasn’t excited about the position, but I’ve come to realize it’s a crucial part of the team. I enjoy seeing the kids transform from inexperienced swimmers to experienced swimmers. I feel like I provide a valuable resource to the parents and coaches. I enjoy being able to tell the coaches and parents what part of the stroke a kid needs help with. It’s pretty relaxing and I can enjoy my coffee while having a front row view at every meet.”
